Carrying your baby is beneficial in so many ways, as long as it is done safely.  At Cuddle Me Close, we have gathered some hints and tips on how to carry your child in a safe and responsible manner.  There are many different babywearing advice and support websites that can offer hints and tips if you are at all uncertain, however we are also more than happy to answer any questions you have on particular baby carriers or on babywearing in general.*  Below are some of the key safety tips to help you avoid any unnecessary accidents:

- Ensure that you strictly follow the manufacturer's instructions when using your carrier.*

- Before using your carrier with your child, ensure that you first practice using it with a doll or teddy.  This will allow you to get used to using it safely, before you use it with your precious bundle!

- Check that the ties/buckles on your carrier are firmly secured before placing your child in the carrier.  If in doubt, do not use the carrier.

- Remove baby before making any adjustments to your carrier.

- Until you feel confident and are well practised, ensure that somebody is available to help you with placing baby in and removing baby from the carrier.

- Use commonsense when choosing activities to carry out whilst wearing your baby.  For example, trampolining or leaning over a hot stove would be inadvisable!

- Be aware that carrying your baby may affect your balance.

- Take care when bending over.  When carrying your child, it is advisable to bend at the knees if picking something up, rather than leaning over.

- Check that your baby is able to breathe comfortably at all times and that their airways are not restricted.  Please note that recent guidance advises against the use of 'bag' slings due to the risk of positional asphyxia.

- Do not use your carrier for any other purpose than as outlined in the manufacturer's instructions.*

Please remember, these are just a few of the many tips that can be used for safe and responsible babywearing.  Should you be in any doubt as to how to use your baby carrier or be unsure of its safety, do not use it with your baby.  Babywearing should be fun for all involved, so take care, be responsible, and reap the rewards.  Happy babywearing!
